Abstract
:
Wind Fluctuating DC voltages due to the intermittent and unpredictable nature of wind are inherently produced by Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS). It necessitates a robust power conditioning phase before the generated power can be reliably integrated into grid or delivered to a load. This work presents the design, modeling and simulation of a two-phase interleaved parallel buck-boost converter controlled by a Fractional Order Proportional-Integral (FOPI) controller. The aim of this work is to address wide input voltage fluctuations ranging from 30 V to 400 V by maintaining a regulated 56 V DC output. The proposed parallel topology provides current evenly across both phases that alleviates switching-device stress enhancing thermal management and reducing ripple in the output through interleaved operation. Component values are taken - a 0.4 mH per-phase inductance and a 363 μF output capacitance which are derived analytically from ripple constraints and verified through simulation. The FOPI controller parameters (Kp = 1, Ki = 17.03, λ = 0.61) are determined using SIMC-based magnitude and phase conditions, with the fractional order λ selected to balance transient performance and robustness. Compared to a conventional integer-order PI controller, the fractional order formulation introduces an additional tuning degree of freedom that yields reduced overshoot, faster settling, and improved steady-state accuracy under both input voltage disturbances and load variations. Simulation results confirm stable voltage regulation and smooth current sharing across the operating range, demonstrating that the proposed FOPI-controlled parallel buck-boost converter is a practical and effective power conditioning solution for modern wind energy applications.
