Review On Intelligent Reflective Surfaces Testbed
Abstract
Intelligent Reflective Surfaces (IRS) have been emerging as a promising innovation in the field of wireless
communication recently. IRS-aided wireless communication systems have gained significant attention since they are capable
of programming the communication environment to enhance spectral efficiency and overall system performance with
passive relaying metamaterials. However, the majority work done so far is on simulation environments. To evaluate the
performance and effectiveness of an IRS system, an extensive and reliable testbed should be developed for various scenarios.
This paper presents an overview of the design and implementation of an IRS testbed considering passive element array and
controller design aspects. IRS elements are examined through dimensions and structural design. The controller section
discusses controller design and development. The integration of these two and how to orchestrate these components are also
discussed. In addition, simulation tools and use cases are also investigated to evaluate the effectiveness of IRS-aided
communication in terms of key metrics such as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Overall, this paper provides a comprehensive
communication testbed outline to elaborate on the performance of real-world IRS-aided communication scenarios.
